Increased Pigmentation

A variety of factors can cause an increase in the pigmentation in the skin. These include excess exposure to sunlight or sun beds ( freckles and lentigo ) , ageing ( age –spots ), pregnancy and the contraceptive pill ( melasma or chloasma ) . Depending on the size and location of these pigmented lesions, they can be very disfiguring and detract from your skin’s natural beauty.

The areas of pigmentation are caused by an increased collection of melanin. Melanin is normally present throughout the skin in small amounts produced by cells called melanocytes. However when stimulated by one of the above methods, these cells will cause an excess amount of melanin to be produced resulting in a brown pigmented lesion.

The area of increased pigmentation, usually either the face or back of the hands, can be treated with a chemical peel. This will cause the area of increased pigmentation to gradually move to the surface of the skin where it is then sloughed away and will peel away taking the excess pigmentation with it. This will help to return the skin to it natural beauty as well as making it appears fresher and more youthful.
